Engelse uitdrukkingen beter begrijpen

Hoewel wij Nederlanders meestal wel een redelijke kennis hebben van de Engelse taal, betekenen sommige Britse uitdrukkingen toch net iets anders dan wij denken. Dit heeft uiteraard ook met culturele verschillen te maken. Nederlanders zijn vaak erg direct in hun taalgebruik. In veel andere talen worden voorzichtigere woordkeuzes gemaakt (eufemismen) om de ander niet direct voor het hoofd te stoten. Maar je moet dan wel kunnen doorgronden wat de spreker nu eigenlijk wil zeggen. Soms best lastig. Daarom hierbij een aantal uitdrukkingen met daarbij de betekenis die de Britten eraan geven en wat wij er als Nederlanders van maken. Altijd handig om eens door te nemen voor je een gesprek ingaat.

Heel interessant. Graag zou ik dan ook willen weten hoe de Britten wel zeggen wat de Nederlanders menen te begrijpen.

Very interesting. Perhaps they could think things over. No serious to be honest it’s quite logical.
Most of those expressions are vague or sarcastic, in Holland we would use the same expressions (some of them), translated into Dutch for the same meanings and then most of the time the others would understand.
But i do like this point, on the other hand because most people don’t notice the meaning anymore when they listen to someone who’s speaking an other language. the only focus on it’s translation. unfortunately, most of the time too literally. THAT’S ALL.
