Dutch courses for expats - all levels

You're an expat in the Netherlands? Time to start learning Dutch? You've come to the right place! We offer live online lessons in a group, led by professional language teachers.

The trainer will contact you before the course starts to assess your level of Dutch and to discuss your personal learning objectives. In this way, we make sure that each student receives the attention he or she needs. 

You will learn vocabulary and grammar quickly and easily with our online activities. Listening and reading exercises allow you to review and practise what you’ve learned so far. Live sessions in the virtual classroom give you plenty of opportunity to practise your speaking skills.

Our groups are small with a maximum group size of eight students. This guarantees enough time for interaction and personal feedback during the lessons. The emphasis is on speaking skills and knowledge of Dutch social norms to increase your confidence in dealing with everyday situations. If necessary we will speak English to make sure you understand properly, but whenever possible Dutch will be the language used. You will get the most out of the course if you participate actively and make as much time as possible to study at home and practise daily.

The study load is approximately 40 hours, including 10 live lessons of 2 hours each. The online course materials will be available for you to use for 24 months. The course works best if you use a webcam and headset.

All courses take place during office hours.

Start dates 2024: 10 September, 11 September or 12 September. 

Beginners course

This course starts from the very beginning and takes you up to level A1. You will become more confident and learn to deal with basic everyday situations in Dutch. We will cover all language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing. 

A2 course

The course with a target level of A2 is meant for learners who can already understand elementary phrases. You can for example:

• introduce yourself,
• ask and answer questions about personal details,
• interact in a simple way - saying what you want, need - as long as the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

In the A2 course you will learn basic elements of grammar, such as: conjugation of verbs, main clause word order, inversion word order, plural nouns, possessive adjectives, (present) perfect tense.

A2.2 course

At the start of this course you should be able to apply basic grammar rules (as specified for level A2). Generally, this means that you should already have some experience of speaking in a Dutch environment OR the A2 course that you did before included a lot of speaking exercises.

In the A2.2 course, we focus on fluency and accuracy. We cover topics such as talking about weekend plans, leaving telephone messages, apologizing and explaining short procedures. Grammar-wise you will learn more about word order, verb constructions and tenses.

B1 course

At this level you should be familiar with all the basic grammar from the A2 courses and be able to apply most of it actively in speech. This course reviews the vocabulary and grammar of the previous levels and helps you to greatly increase your vocabulary. You will practise formulating sentences quickly - without thinking - and taking part in longer conversations. And you will learn to phrase things in different ways. We practise talking about the consequences of our actions and expressing emotions, but also practical everyday things like dealing with the bank, the estate agent, people from the gas or electricity company and so on.
