Course design
In the first session, we cover the main principles of good writing, tailored to scientific or technical content. We’ll also discuss the use of generative AI and its place in scientific writing. Practical examples and exercises help you to see how the principles work. We use samples of your own work to show how to apply the principles to your specific type of writing. This session is one day, live, in Utrecht.
In the second part of the course we focus on your personal writing style in individual feedback sessions. These sessions are online and can be scheduled flexibly, depending on your diary.
Aims of the course
- To think about the logical organization of the material that has to be included in a scientific report.
- To become aware of and to be able to correct grammatical mistakes and word choice in your own reports. In other words, to improve your language accuracy.
- To recognise and to learn to produce easily readable texts. This involves developing a good writing style for maximum readability.
Who should attend this course in scientific report writing?
- Entrance level scientists contributing to and/or writing reports.
- More experienced writers who want to develop their writing style to an appropriate scientific register.
- Business writers who write technical content, as in technical sales or engineering for example.
Course outline
In the first session we will focus on the general principles of scientific writing:
- Getting organized before writing
- Sections of a scientific report
- Writing effective paragraphs
- Language aspects in scientific writing
- Guidelines for readability
- Effective use of generative AI
During the individual coaching sessions the feedback will address your needs specifically. These may vary from the correct use of tables and figures and how to refer to them in the text to the differences between Dutch and English scientific writing. Do you struggle with the organisation of your data or writing a summary? It will be covered during the online coaching sessions.
Study load and course certificate
The course offers 10 contact hours. Working on assignments and (re-)writing after feedback may take another 10 hours. Participants receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.
